Hello and Happy New Year to all
my valued customers. We started off last year with spring
flounders as usual. Fishing was slightly improved over the
previous year with 3 trips catching over 50. There were
some slow trips mixed in, but overall was pretty good.
Small bass were mixed in as usual. Bass fishing in the
spring was good, with most limits taken on most trips. That
largest fish was a 37 ½ pound beauty taken by Frank Sav on a
live bunker. This action last well into July with fish
caught by a variety of methods. Sharking was excellent
early, for the blue sharks anyway. Unfortunately only one
keeper mako was caught.
Bass fishing slowed later in
the summer but a run of fluke took up the slack. Best trip
of the summer was a trip for Eddie Nalen and friends with 17
keepers with up to 8 ½ pounds taken. Blue fishing was red
hot throughout the summer with bait and chum working best.
The canyon lit up until late August with the trolling having
the edge early. A trip for Lloyd and friends resulted in 8
big yellow fins between 70 and 100 pounds, a bunch of nice
mahi, and 3 for 3 on 150 pound big eyes. The next trip for
the same group resulted in a red hot troll bite with over 20
long fin taken and a big eye which was estimated at 300
pounds lost at boat side after a 2 hour battle. Another note
worthy trip was a split for Marco, Tony and Fred resulting
in a limit of 12 big yellow fin 75 and 95 pounds in a pile
of Mahi. The yellows were all 60 pounds plus this year and
the Mahi were sizable and plentiful. The weakfish showed
later in the year and were quite plentiful at times. Bass
fishing was ok in the fall but the size was off a little.
We had a good shot of Blue Fin in the Mud Hole this year but
the fish on the 30 Fathom Line never really showed.
Blackfishing was excellent from start to finish this year
averaging over 40 per trip from mid November until mid
January. Many fish over 10 pounds were taken with the
largest being 13 ½ pounds. Larry Ludwig won the Sloan
Kettering Charity Tournament with a 12.4 pounder. The
Offshore Sea Bass/Pollack trips were cancelled due to the
lack of fish this winter. What was unusual this year was
the abundance of Codfish late this winter. Overall a great
season of fishing!
Due to substantial increase in
fuel and bait costs this year there will be an increase in
rates next season. I assure you I will not profit from
this, however, if I am to keep up the standard of excellence
that you have become accustomed to I have no choice but to
do this.
Hope all of you had a healthy
and productive winter and I look forward to seeing you in
the spring.
Please book your trips early
this year as we were unusually busy last season. Don’t
forget to call if you want to get in on our split trips. We
did many of these last year.
Sincerely,
Captain Nick Savene
